The code makes us hypocrites

We are only a few hours away from the fight of the century. Drago vs Balboa, Andre the Giant vs Hulk Hogan, and Terminator vs T1000...those got nothing on Lucic vs. the entire city of Buffalo. Yup, we all know the back story and the build-up for this game by now. WGR is doing their darnedest to become the Sabres version of Don King. Same goes for the TBN.
We want Lucic's head on a platter.
We want the Sabres to crack skulls and stick up for themselves. We are calling for Zach Kassian, Andrew Peters, Rob Ray, Butterbean and anyone who can beat the crap out of Lucic. The Code demands it! We want blood. We want retribution. We want to be the bully. We are kind of...crazy?
I can't help but think that I'm a hypocrite.
Did we forget about where we were at the start of September? You remember when all those stories came out about the three enforcers dying and the cries from some fans and media members were calling for the elimination of fighting. People in the media were giving examples about how fighting had turned them off. The thought of seeing a guy get laid out on the ice after getting decked by a left hand made some people in the media sick.
Goodbye Don Cherry's hockey and welcome the gentler hockey world.
Of course, once a story like the Lucic hit came down, the media and the fans went back to Don Cherry's hockey. I'm sure if another goon dies, it will go back to wanting a gentler hockey world.
It was as if the media and some of the fans thought they had to be politically correct and take in the considerations of the families who were affected by the recent deaths by denouncing fighting. Now, we are back to where we were before the rash of enforcers dying. We are calling the Sabres pu$$ies for not fighting Lucic. So, let me get this straight? If we give Lucic a concussion, will that be greeted with thunderous applause? Well, if we are going by the dated Code, we should be partying like a rock star if it goes down that way. However, when I read columns about getting rid of fighting and head shots, it sure didn't seem that we would be going down the road of retribution.
We are going for an eye-for-an-eye kind of mentality.
Hey, I'm not trying to be some sort of Good Samaritan over here, I think I want blood as much as the next vampire, but it's just ironic how much our minds have changed once we got bullied. It was easy to play the school principal when it came to the talk about banning fighting, but once it struck home, all bets were off. We went through The Code book as if we had just been dumped and were looking through our black book and demanded a booty call to get even.
So, what are we expecting for Wednesday? Do we want Kaleta to run the Bruins goalie? Do we want Lucic to get hipped check like Darcy Tucker destroying Mike Peca's career? Can you imagine what happens if the Sabres don't do anything? My goodness, Twitter would blow up. I don't know. There are just other situations to deal with. Will this team become a Cup contender if they jump Lucic? I don't think that has any bearing on it. However, there are some things the Sabres can change.
I don't need a goalie to get run or a Ottawa/Buffalo bench clearing fight. However, I want intensity. I want hits. I want these guys to play out of character. Revenge type games happen constantly in sports, but do they need to end in a brawl? No. But if you go by the stupid code book, it does. Yeah, I know..I've never played the game. I don't know The Code because I've never seen the book at the Library.
I think getting the win and not getting pushed around is all I ask for. If Boston plays physically, which we know they will, we need to try and match them. More importantly, we need to get respect. Respect doesn't have to be earned by having goalie fights. Beat them by 3 or 4 goals and you'll get their respect. Show you have guts and you can hit, and you'll get respect. Run them out of the building and it's R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I won't go crazy if the Sabres don't respond in a bunk house brawl type. I'll be annoyed as hell if they get blown out. Just learn from your mistakes. I'm just not going to beat my head against the table because The (stupid) Code demands of it. I don't need retribution, I just don't want another situation where our goalie is sitting there with his helmet off and seeing Tweedy birds around his head. If the Bruins punch you, you punch back. That's all I demand.
Self-defense is something that happens in everyday life and that I can get behind.
